Autoimmune Disorders

by Dr Veerle Van Tricht MD

Autoimmune disease is an illness or disorder that occurs when healthy tissue (cells) get destroyed by the body’s own immune system. … There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disease, from multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes to coeliac disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Certain autoimmune disorders specifically target the eyes including ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, Mooren’s corneal ulcer, and some forms of uveitis.

Autoimmune disorders are on the increase and around 75% of those affected are women. Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome are autoimmune conditions that are known to have a greater prevalence in the female population. Hormones may play a part in the autoimmune response, particularly oestrogen, which may be why women are more affected. Hormonal changes in pregnancy and possibly at menopause can trigger autoimmune changes.

Studies have raised the possibility that stress may cause autoimmune disease, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, because it found a higher incidence of autoimmune diseases among people who were previously diagnosed with stress-related disorders.

Up to 50% of patients with autoimmune diseases show an impairment of health-related quality of life and exhibit depression-like symptoms. Research has shown that depression and anxiety are more common in patients with autoimmune diseases than chronic degenerative conditions, likely due to the direct effect of inflammatory cytokines on the central nervous system.

Autoimmune disorders occur when our immune system’s response is misdirected and attacks the body’s own tissues, causing inflammation in the affected organs and other complications.

Root Causes:

Amalgam dental fillings

Viral, bacterial, fungal infections

Allergens in food and the environment

Leaky gut

Stress

Your immune system will redirect its attack to:

Joints (Rheumatoid arthritis)

Brain (Multiple sclerosis

Thyroid

Gut (IBS and Crohn’s)

Skin (Psoriasis)

Whole body (Lupus)

A healthy immune system protects us from invaders such as viruses, bacteria and other micro-organisms that may be a threat to our well-being.
